Bonderizing : surface treatment consisting of coating with phosphate to prevent from oxidation.

Casing : endless close wound coil

Coil of wire : bundle of wire.

Compression spring : wire coiled in an helix shape, with open wound coils, providing a force when compressed.

Dereeler : motorized turntable to provide the wire to the coiler (or wire bender).

Dimension control : measure of spring dimensions (outer diameter, free length, pitch, size of hooks).

Double torsion spring : double body torsion spring

Extension spring : wire coiled in an helix shape, with close wound coils, providing a force when pulled.

Grinding machine : machine used to grind the ends of a compression springs so they become flat

Grinding wheel : specific stone used to grind the spring ends

Initial tension : pitch reduction at each end of a compression spring.

Length gage : equipment used directly on the spring coiler to measure the OD and the length of the spring.

Load tester : equipment to measure the load of compression or extension springs at a determined height

Loop / hook : specific shape of the ends of an extension spring to hook it.

Passivation : deep washing of springs and wire parts after the forming, grinding and stress relieving operations

Pitch : space between coils

Hot setting : bringing a spring to solid height under high temperature

Shot peening : process consisting a projecting violently more or less hard particles to homogenize the surface of the wire after the coiling operation (valve springs).

Spring coiler : specific machine tool dedicated to the production of springs

Spring wire : high tensile wire quality used to manufacture springs

Square end : pitch reduction at the extremities of a compression spring

Stress relieving oven : oven used to stress relieve the springs after the coiling operation

Stripping operation : removal of the enamel coating on a copper enameled wire.

Tempering : Heat treatment intended to homogenize the molecular structure of the wire after it's forming

Tensile : force required to break a wire when extended.

Torque : load applied by a torsion or double torsion spring

Torsion spring : wire coiled in an helix shape, with close wound coils, or not, with legs to apply a torque when under constraint.
